Steve Everett, from County Durham, UK, is in Guyana for different purposes, including finding the 'biggest diamond'. Both are searching for a destination that is undefined but sincerely sought. In his quest to find the biggest diamond he meets Ian, Darren's relation, a fellow explorer in the bush. Much of the narrative is generated in the mind of Darren, including the story of 'jaguar man', a British man of Irish background who takes his 'jaguarness' to another level.
