Novelist, journalist, social reformer and historian H.G. Wells was one of the greatest science fiction writers. With Aldous Huxley and, later, George Orwell, he defined the adventurous, social concern of early speculative fiction where the human condition was played out on a greater stage. Wells created over fifty novels, including <i>The Time Machine</i>, <i>The Invisible Man</i> and <i>The War of the Worlds</i>. <p/><b>Emelyne Godfrey</b>, PhD, is Chairperson of the H.G. Wells Society. She is author of <i>Femininity, Crime and Self-Defence in Victorian Literature and Society</i> (2012) and <i>Masculinity, Crime and Self-Defence in Victorian Literature</i> (2010). In 2014 she edited <i>The Convert</i>, the first suffragette novel, originally published in 1907. Most recently, she was editor of <i>Utopias and Dystopias in the Fiction of H.G. Wells and William Morris</i> (2016).
