He studied at Newcastle and St. Andrews Universities and has a Ph.D. in astronomy. He stopped working as an astrophysicist for the European Space Agency to become a full-time writer. <i>Revelation Space</i> and <i>Pushing Ice </i>were shortlisted for the Arthur C.
