Dig Nitty's songs were written while Erin McGrath was working as a New York City Park Ranger, monitoring birds at the beach in the Rockaways. McGrath used that experience to shape her ideas. 'The complete blankness of walking in a straight line monitoring birds would free up my brain and melodies would float in.' While it may not be related to the album's core themes of friendship, death, trauma, chronic illness, loneliness, and love, there is a representation of freedom synonymous with birds that can be found within Reverse of Mastery. The Brooklyn based trio's full-length debut works from so many of the moments that define early life, feelings brought on by deep friendship and profound loss, capturing sentiments as they occur in context to their surroundings. Blending together elements of spooky folk-country, surf/punk rock, and indie, there's a wide depth of dynamics in the band's collaborative songwriting.
