Unlike vintage ribbon mics, the LR100 is built to modern specs, making it ideal for a much larger number of sound sources, including electric guitar cabinets, drums, brass and woodwinds, and more. Following design and material improvements, ribbon mics gained most in popularity as electric guitar microphones. Their "darker" sound is exceptional at cutting midrange harshness from overdriven amps, smoothing out your tone. Furthermore, their low end punch produces fantastic guitar recordings. Most vintage ribbon mics are passive, producing a low voltage output that requires the use of a step-up transformer or special preamp to raise the output to standard recording levels. In contrast, the LR100 features an active design that retains the positive characteristics of the classic ribbon mic sound, while producing an output level better suited for modern recording equipment. Unlike vintage ribbon mics, the LR100 features a robust modern design that eliminates the fragility associated with older designs.
