It's a time of anxiety and a time of hope. It's also the end of an era, because whatever happens they will go separate ways. Meanwhile there is the long summer to fill.

Out of the blue they receive an astonishing invitation. Four of them are a band. A wealthy celebrity hears them and wants them to play at an event to be held at his villa in Tuscany. All their expenses will be paid and they will be housed in luxury accommodation. It sounds too good to be true, and it is.

They set off for Italy, but when they reach the villa they find it's empty. The location is remote, and with no transport, no internet connection and no mobile signal they are cut off from the outside world. A sequence of mysterious events begins, forcing them to review who they are, rethink what's important to them, and wonder whether what they thought was real actually is.

It's not until the very end that we discover why they've been brought to the villa and what the experience will mean for them.

Review Quotes

I remember, not so long ago, I enjoyed another book by this author. It was for a young adult readership and entitled Aftershocks. It was a good book; fast-paced with a twisting plot and plenty of interesting characters to get to know. Although this new book by Phill Featherstone is for adults - or almost adults - it is similar in many ways. From the get-go, there's plenty going on, and the author is a dab hand at developing his characters and keeping his readers guessing until the very last page. In fact, if this book is anything to go by, this author seems to be getting better and better.

So, what's it about? Well, in a nutshell, a pop band is invited out to Italy to perform at a wedding. What follows is a character-led story, a story of mishaps, mayhem and mystery, which ends, not with everything all sorted, but with a lot of the mystery still hanging over the characters - and the readers. In many ways, this is a coming of age story, as the characters not only attempt to discover what is going on, but also try to develop an understanding of who they are. In a strange way, the novel reminded me of

the film, Stand By Me. what happened on the journey wasn't important; what happened to the characters and how they developed was.

To sum up, I must say this is a very enjoyable read. And I think anybody who enjoys mystery, complex characters, and a pacey writing style will find this of interest. Although Aftershocks is good, this is considerably better, and I wonder how good the author's next story will be.

A 'Wishing Shelf' Book Review
