Ask the child to pound one peg at a time as you identify them by color. Count pegs with the child. Repeat the activity until the child has mastered counting to eight. Ask the child to pound down a certain number of pegs as you count those pegs aloud. Demonstrate how a peg goes up when the opposite peg goes down. Allow the child to experiment with this, then ask him or her to predict which peg will go up when another goes down.
